This lesson guides students to consider the politics of mythology and media through analysis how Shinto mythology is retold in namely Capcom’s action-adventure game Ōkami (2006). Students will explore how myths about kami (Shinto deities) were told at their “inception” compared to how they are retold today and why changes may have occurred. It would be best for this lesson to come after introductory lessons that establish the pantheon, some of the foundational myths, and the imperial lineage from Amaterasu to Ninigi and Jinmu so that recognition and correlation can be made.
